Comparing LED Shop Lights

By Willie Sandry on January, 22 2025

Light the Room, or Light the Tool? Shop lighting is important for safety and accuracy, and reduces eye strain on those long work days. But should you focus your efforts lighting the entire shop space, or illuminate key areas as required for the job at hand? The answer is probably both. Even once you have overhead lighting in a shop setting, more lights are often required at particular tools.

Laguna Chameleon 95CRI

You’ve Come a Long Way. Shop lighting has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years, and specialty LED lights are available for specific tools. This Chameleon 95CRI has a long, rectangular diffuser that’s particularly well-suited for a lathe. Here the Chameleon is mounted to a 12|16 Revo Lathe, but a desk clamp makes mounting possibilities nearly endless.

Chameleon LED lights

That’s Quite a Trick! Not only do the Chameleon LED lights offer variable brightness, as the name would suggest, they offer infinitely adjustable color temperature as well. Whether your eyes need a warm tone, or a cool look to do your best work, the Chameleon series lights have you covered.

You Won’t Bust a Knuckle. The ergonomic over-molded handles on the Chameleon 95CRI give you plenty of room for easy adjustment. In fact, nearly every imaginable angle or position is possible with its unique articulating arm.

Twist the Wrist. Even the diffuser hood rotates to just the right angle. Once you position the light, it stays just where you need it, making this a fantastic light at the lathe or workbench.

Laguna SpineLock

SpineLock to the Rescue. Need a quick pop of light at the bandsaw? The SpineLock is a great choice for bright task lighting, where a narrow beam of light is needed. With a light output of 500 lumens, and a Color Rendering Index of 80, this flexible light is a perfect compliment to the shop.

Laguna Chameleon 90CRI

Chameleon 90 CRI. Here’s a quick size comparison of the Chameleon 90 CRI and the SpineLock, both mounted to the same bandsaw. The Chameleon 90 CRI is larger and made from robust cast metal parts, and mounts via an articulated swing arm, while the SpineLock is lighter and more compact, and motion is controlled by a flexible shaft or “spine.”

Options for mounting

Light It Up. The Chameleon 90 CRI offers adjustable brightness of 0-940 lumens, and infinitely adjustable color temperature. A CRI of 90 and wide 60-degree beam angle mean you’ll enjoy even lighting and accurate colors as you light up the shop.

Options for Mounting. On popular bandsaws such as the Laguna 14/12, lights can be installed at the front, or on top of the upper wheel housing. The Chameleon 90CRI has an extra-long swing arm, making it a great choice to mount in the top position. Just four bolts complete the installation.

Note: Make sure to use split-ring lock washers or thread locker for a safe and permanent installation.

Compare brightness

Compare Brightness and Beam Angle. The Chameleon 95CRI color rendering index jumps to 95, which is impressive in a shop light. Ratings that high are usually reserved for professional photo lights. Enjoy even lighting with crisp details and photo-quality color rendering with this innovative LED light. The Chameleon 95CRI has an adjustable light output of 0-720 lumens, and an ultra-wide beam angle of 120 degrees. Both of the Chameleon series lights, as you might guess, feature adjustable color temperature.

You have never seen so clearly

You’ve Never Seen Things So Clearly. The long, slender shape of the Chameleon 95CRI makes it ideal for mounting on a lathe. Don’t get me wrong, with the included table clamp, it would make a great workbench or desk light as well. In this example, an optional mounting bracket (which may have come with your 12|16 lathe) puts the light in the perfect ergonomic position. In fact, there are two mounting options when using the L-shaped bracket. It can be mounted in the “High position” (shown), or the bracket can be rotated 180 degrees to mount the light in the “Low position.” Either way works great on the 12|16 lathe. It’s important to note that all of these quality LED lights can be adapted to just about any tool, regardless of brand, but you’ll experience a hassle-free assembly on many Laguna tools. Adjustment at you fingertips

Adjustments at Your Fingertips. Clear and easy to reach controls on the Chameleon series lights let you easily dial in the brightness and color temperature to suit the job at hand. Turners will appreciate the photo-realistic color rendering when finishing on the lathe. You’ll know exactly what the finished project will look like, and have the right amount of light for working safely.
