In the old days, building wood furniture took tens to hundreds of man-hours and a varied number of different hand tools. While there were masters of the trade, the amount of time it took to produce one product was too much to be sustainable in the long run.
By using a CNC router, you will cut down the amount of time spent making furniture so you can spend that time doing something else.
Let’s look at a few fun DIY furniture projects that you can do on your CNC router.
Before starting any woodworking project, take some time to review safety guidelines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to keep safe.
1. Wood Shelves
If you have a SmartShop II machine, there is no need to ever buy shelves again. You can build your own relatively quickly with no mess to clean up afterward.
Step 1: All you have to do is choose your desired timber material. We used 1/2-inch Baltic Birch plywood. Then, secure it in place on the machine’s table.
Step 2: Program your simple shelf unit, and import the files into the SmartShop II machine.
Step 3: Run the machine, and while your parts are being cut you can be doing other work around the shop.
Step 4: Once the SmartShop II is finished cutting out all of your pieces, you can remove the wood elements from the table and begin the assembly process.
Step 5: Assemble the shelves and place them in the desired location.
Step 6: Decorate the shelves to your liking.
2: Build A Cabinet
Another project you can conquer using a CNC router is building a new cabinet. We like to use the SmartShop II SUV router for this project because it can quickly cut out all the pieces plus the pilot holes and dados.
This ensures that the piece will fit together perfectly when you put the cabinet together.
Step 1: Place your desired wood material on the table.
Step 2: Use software to create the cabinet design. This part takes the longest, but if you are already familiar with the program, then you can have a complete file ready for transfer in about 10 minutes.
Step 3: Import your cabinet design files into the SmartShop II SUV system and start the machine.
Step 4: After the cutouts are completed, you can remove the pieces from the machine and begin assembly.
Step 5: You can paint or stain the wood to fit in with the style of your room.
Step 6: Give your new cabinet a home, and fill it up with whatever you need to store.
3: Make A Studio Desk
With many families stuck at home during quarantine, children are being homeschooled. If you find that your kids need a studio desk, then you can use the SmartShop II CNC router to build one quickly.
Step 1: Again, you want to pick your material first. We used 3/4-inch Birch plywood for our studio desk project.
Step 2: Design your new desk digitally and import it onto the machine. What makes ours special is the modern design. We used a semi-circle top and contemporary angles to make a stand-out piece of furniture that everyone will love.
Step 3: Start the machine, and let it run through the files until completion.
Step 4: Apply whatever finish you want. This can be paint, stain, etc. We used Walnut veneer for a sleek look.
Step 5: Assemble the studio desk.
4: Coffee Table
Whether you are furnishing a man cave or replacing your old coffee table in the living room, building your own coffee table can be quite satisfying. It’s a piece of furniture that everyone will see.
It’s a focal point in the room, and you can tell anyone who uses it that you built it yourself. The best part about coffee tables is that you have the freedom to explore your creative side.
All you have to do is use a SmartShop CNC router. With 3D edge routing and programmable features, you can produce just about any type of design.
Step 1: Choose a stable wood material for your new coffee table.
Step 2: Have fun creating the digital design, and then import the files into the SmartShop system.
Step 3: Run the machine.
Step 4: Once it has finished cutting out all the pieces, you can stain or paint them.
Step 5: Finish up by assembling the coffee table.
