Chameleon Changes Colors. Laguna has made a name for itself with world class tools like the 1412 bandsaw, but some woodworkers might not be aware of the top-flight accessories available as well. Leading off the list of my favorite power tool accessories is the Chameleon LED Light. This spotlight is built like a tank, and offers adjustable light intensity and color temperature. Plus, the color rendering index (CRI) of 90 is quite high on this model. It puts out an incredible amount of light, right where you need it.
Just the Right Size. Another great add-on for the 1216 Lathe is a 95CRI Chameleon Lamp. The elongated bezel casts light across the entire bed of the machine, which is helpful for intricate turning. Just like the spotlight style Chameleon, this long slender version allows adjustment of light output and color temperature. Plus, multiple articulations allow you to position it just about anywhere.
Mobility Kit. Already have everything you need in the shop, including a sore back? Laguna’s mobility kit is specifically engineered to make large machinery easy to move. Just step down on the foot pedal, and the machine will lift effortlessly, and glide around your shop with ease. Yet once you drop the pedal down, the tool is completely stable. The kit consists of a solid axle connecting two wheels on one side, and the swivel caster assembly on the other. Best of all, it fits several tools in the lineup including bandsaws and lathes.
Resaw King. The carbide-tipped Resaw King is a game changer for resawing wide boards. Combined with a good steel frame bandsaw, this blade will have you slicing veneers as thin as 1/32” time after time. Plus, the vari-tooth spacing all but eliminates blade flutter and harmonics, for the smoothest cuts you’ve ever seen off the bandsaw. It’s one I use frequently, especially in the ½” and ¾” widths.
Shape-Shifting Shop Support. The all-new XP|20 and XP|14 conveyors make excellent material-handling accessories in the shop. Great for infeed / outfeed support at the planer or tablesaw, they’re height-adjustable to accommodate just about any tool – including taller bandsaws. Or you can add a plywood top for a mobile workbench. Just drill four holes in the underside of your top to receive the special threaded hardware. Read more on this special conveyor feature here…
Wixey DRO Built-In. The PX|20 Planer is a beast that purrs like a kitten, thanks to its Sheartec II cutterhead with 4-sided carbide inserts. But the one feature that really stands out is a built-in Wixey digital readout. Usually this is an add-on accessory for any large planer. That’s an added expense, and hassle to install on other models. Luckily, this “accessory” is standard on all PX|16, PX|20, and PX|22 models!
Digital Precision. I’ve found the Wixey DRO to be incredibly accurate and repeatable for all my planing tasks. You can put the digital calipers away in a drawer, because the PX|20 has everything you need for precision planing, right out of the crate. I’ve had other large planers with a DRO, but nothing comes close to the clean integration of the readout on the large PX Series Planers.
New G8 Grinder. The G8 Grinder is quickly becoming a shop essential for grinding and polishing. It makes quick work of precision sharpening with its two large grindstones. Plus, the tool rests are nicely adjustable to accommodate a variety of jobs. But what impressed me most was a handy accessory that’s stored behind the tool.
All Dressed Up. I’m a sucker for thoughtfully integrated accessories on tools. Around the back of the G8 Grinder, you’ll find a storage spot for a wheel dressing tool to clean up the grindstones. It works well, and conveniently stores right on the tool base when you’re done for the day.
Accessories Galore. The 1216 lathe has a lot of nice available accessories like the wide and stable base as well as the mobility kit. But the accessories that stand out most are the 10” and 20” bed extensions, making this midi lathe feel much bigger and more capable. The short 10” extension can be added on either side of the machine, but it’s often mounted to the left of the motor for bowl turning. Add a 20” extension on the right to truly expand your turning capabilities!
